What's New in SPSS Statistics 29?

IBM has a released a new version of its top suite of statistical-analysis software – SPSS Statistics 29. Anyone who studies or works with statistics will know SPSS Statistics as a powerful tool for data management, advanced analytics, and more.

So what’s new in SPSS Statistics 29 that distinguishes it from its 28 predecessors? Anything worth rushing to upgrade from your current version of the software suite? Here are some of the new features included to help you answer that last question.

New Analysis Features

SPSS Statistics 29 features new ways to analyze data. This includes linear OLS alternatives like the new Linear Elastic Net extension, Linear Lasso Regression analysis, and Linear Ridge Regression analysis. Statistics 29 also allows you to run parametric accelerated failure time (AFT) model analyses, providing a new approach to analyzing survival data.

Expanded Command Syntax

SPSS Statistics 29 supports new command inputs. For example, the linear OLS alternatives identified earlier (Elastic Net, Lasso Regression, and Ridge Regression) can be triggered via simple inputs. And existing inputs now offer additional functionality. For example, the “MIXED” and “GENLINMIXED” commands now include pseudo-R2 measures and the intra-class correlation coefficient in their output.

Violin Plots

Another new way of analyzing data in SPSS Statistics 29 is the violin plot. This is a new template available in the Graphboard Template Chooser. Violin plots are like crosses between box plots and kernel density plots, and their main use is to visualize the distribution of numerical data, showing the density of each variable as well as summary statistics.

Improved Interface

The workbook toolbar in SPSS Statistics 29 includes several new options to optimize the user experience. These include the option to clear all outputs, show or hide all syntax windows, and toggle between Classic and Workbook modes with ease. Additionally, the Search feature has been modernized, with search terms entered into a field in the toolbar and a dropdown list of top results displayed beneath it.
